The wireless noise-canceling headphones to look for on Prime Day
The Sony WH-1000XM4 offers excellent noise cancellation and amazing sound quality, all in a comfortable, lightweight design. Yes, they haven’t been replaced by the equally excellent WH-1000XM5, but Sony’s newest cans just lie flat instead of folding for easier transport – and their very existence. could bring some Prime Day discounts on the XM4.
While they don’t look significantly different from their predecessors (the sensibly named Sony WH-1000XM3), several new features, including multipoint pairing, DSEE Extreme upscaling, conversation recognition, and auto play/pause using a built-in sensor, help the WH-1000XM4 maintain the title of best headphones in 2022.
By all possible metrics, the Sony WH-1000XM4 is a wonderful pair of wireless noise-canceling headphones. They deliver exactly what they promise and more, thanks to their exceptional noise cancellation and cutting-edge codec support.
In addition to the settings listed above, the Sony WH-1000XM4 supports Sony’s 360 Reality Audio format which allows spatial audio in stereo headphones plus the LDAC codec which can output a bit rate of up to 990 kbps. The only unfortunate thing is that they no longer support aptX or aptX HD, so your Hi-Res Audio support mileage may vary.
Still, even with no discount due to the August 2020 release date, these cans are highly recommended.
OK, so they don’t beat the Sony WH-1000XM4 above in terms of battery life and price, but the Bose 700 noise-canceling headphones are still a brilliant pair of over-ear cans – and the best Bose headphones that we analyzed. (Don’t believe us? Check out our Bose Noise Canceling Headphones 700 review).
Bose pioneered ANC technology and has not rested on its laurels. The company’s noise-canceling headphones were originally designed for airline pilots to block out ambient sounds and jet engine noise, but Bose built on its success by first bringing it to the rest and then applying noise cancellation to phonecalls. as well as music to the noise canceling headphones 700. It’s a fantastic feature – and these are certainly the best noise canceling headphones we’ve ever tested for making calls.
The sound quality is undeniably good, with a vibrant, lively character and a well-balanced soundstage, impressing during our testing.
If you’re trying to decide between buying the Sony WH-1000XM4s and the Bose 700 noise-canceling headphones, we recommend the former because of the slightly lower price and better battery life.
Then again, who knows what kind of discount Prime Day might bring? After all, these headphones were released in September 2019… And you’ve got our full support if you opt for these Bose cans – they sound great, they look impressive, and the noise cancellation is out of this world.
Really elegant? Check. Noise cancelling? Oh yeah. But this is Bowers & Wilkins, so you’ll have to pay a premium fee for the ownership privilege, right? Well, not so fast. Although they launched for $399 / £349 / AU$600 / R3999, the PX7 S2 is now with us, so it’s reasonable to expect a discount on the older model, especially for Amazon Prime Day.
As we mentioned, the high-end noise cancellation, brilliant sound quality, and improved aesthetics here can give any of the headphones on this list a run for their money. And despite being a triple threat, somehow they continue to offer even more.
As we noted in our review of the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 Wireless Headphones, they also support aptX Adaptive for greater stability and latency between the headphones and your device, as well as high-quality (24-bit) aptX HD streaming. Our only real complaint is the lack of swipe or touch gesture controls, but that’s something not everyone is a fan of anyway.
Watch out for price drops, because even at a small discount they will sound (sensitive and audible) much more expensive than they are…
Yes, back to Sony – not surprising as a) these headphones are fantastic and b) they’re a little older now.
Want to know how good Sony’s 1000XM wireless line is? Look no further than this product: the Sony WH-1000XM3 have been the world’s best noise canceling headphones for two years in a row – and now they’ve been surpassed by the new Sony WH-1000XM4 and the Sony WH-1000XM5, we hope this means deals offers in these fantastic tins.
Their noise canceling is really second to their little brothers, they still feel super comfortable and offer useful features including a battery life of around 30 hours.
The Sony WH-1000XM3 also features aptX HD and Sony LDAC, two of the best ways to listen to high-res music from your phone wirelessly too (later models ditched aptX HD).
And because they’re virtually identical in appearance to the latest XM4, no one will know which ones you’re using – or how much money you’ve saved…

The Shure AONIC 50 are wireless active noise canceling headphones that have been selling at a premium price to compete with the likes of Sony and Bose for some time now.
But here’s the thing: they were released in April 2020 and they’re not getting any younger.
Listeners will enjoy a wide soundstage and great-sounding audio, plus the build quality and finish here are excellent. Even a quick look at our review of the Shure AONIC 50 won’t leave you in any doubt as to how impressed we were with its punchy, textured, and detailed performance.
Disadvantages? A couple. They don’t have an auto-off feature and, surprisingly, any touch-on-ear controls, but when it comes to audio quality, the Shure Aonic 50 knows how to lure you in and keep you coming back for more.
The Shure AONIC 50 are laser-focused to provide the best sound quality of almost any noise-canceling headphones – making them the best noise-canceling headphones for audiophiles, even two years (and change) since its release.
Will these noise-canceling wireless headphones from Shure be decently priced for Prime Day? We don’t have a crystal ball, but we certainly hope so…
