Marvel’s worst movie is getting a sequel, according to a new leak from Marvel Studios.
Eternals, the lowest-rated Marvel movie among fans and critics — though not in our Marvel movies guide — might get a follow-up, according to moderators on the Marvel Studios spoilers page on Reddit.
How to play in a new one Tales from the Mod Queue Queue (opens in new tab), Eternals 2 “is on track” at Marvel Studios, though there’s no indication of how far along the production line it might be. The leak also suggests that Chloé Zhao, who directed the first Eternals movie, may not return for the sequel. However, if Zhao signs on for Eternals 2, she could be “heavily constrained” by the Marvel mastermind, which includes individuals like Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito.
Meanwhile, the post contains unverified information that production issues hampered the superhero movie’s development. Marvel officials are said to be worried about a similar scenario playing out again if Eternals 2 is officially lit, but again, this could just be conjecture.
In fact, the Marvel Studios Spoilers moderation team says Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans should take all Eternals 2 information with a giant pinch of salt. However, the mods on the Reddit page also claim that these details come from trusted sources. and reliable sources. Basically, readers can decide if any (or all) of this is true or not. We’ve reached out to Disney for official comment on the rumor and will update this article if we receive a response.
The Eternals was released in theaters in November 2021, but it has become the lowest-rated MCU movie so far. Currently, the Marvel Phase 4 project holds a 47% “rotten” rating (opens in new tab) on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, placing it at last on Rotten Tomatoes’ MCU movie ratings list. Meanwhile, Eternals has an audience rating of 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb.com (opens in new tab) – only Ms Marvel, the latest show from Marvel Disney Plus, has a lower IMDB rating (6.2) than Eternals among the MCU’s various movie and TV offerings. This is also discounting Sony’s Marvel productions like Morbius and Venom.
In our review, we said that Eternals was a “better movie than some critics suggested”, adding “an MCU-worthy entry that provides a thought-provoking meditation on what it means to be human, albeit draped in superhero clothing”. Most fans disagreed with us, but we consider some other Marvel movies to be worse entries into the MCU than Eternals. Read our article rated the best Marvel movies to find out which ones we rated lower than the Eternals.
Analysis: Do the Eternals deserve another chance?
Full spoilers for Eternals follow. You have been warned.
We think so. Of course, as we noted in our review, there are some major issues with Eternals – its sweeping narrative once the film’s big twist is revealed, plus its shocking jump cuts, to name two – made for a disjointed clock.
These criticisms have only become more evident with each MCU movie and TV show that passes, with other projects not mentioning events surrounding the potential emergence of a new Celestial – Tiamut – from the Earth’s core. Or the fact that the dead, marble-colored, gigantic Tiamut is now visible in the Indian Ocean. Or the revelation that some of the Eternals were kidnapped by another Celestial in Arishem, who would have been visible to all humans on Earth – due to their size – before leaving with their abductees.
However, for a movie based on some of the toughest comic book content in Marvel history, it did the best job possible of bringing the complicated history of the Eternals comics to moviegoers and MCU fans alike.
His brief exploration of the MCU’s history of the Celestials teased more about the role of these mysterious, cosmic entities in the creation of the universe – and their nefarious plan to do so. The introduction of the first openly gay and deaf superheroes to the MCU has done a lot for representation and diversity in the biggest film franchise in the world. Zhao’s cinematography and keen directing eye made him one of the most visually stunning Marvel movies ever made. And while its post-credits scenes were disappointingly leaked ahead of the movie’s release, they didn’t please audiences any less than similar end-credits sequences we’ve seen before in the MCU.
So there was a lot to like about Eternals. Based on these post-credits scenes, Marvel isn’t done with the characters who starred – whether in major roles or small parts – in it. Maybe the studio even feels it owes it to The Eternals to make a sequel and show how integral they can be to the MCU. It would be a redemption story worthy of Tony Stark/Iron Man, Winter Soldier or Loki if it happened.
If an Eternals sequel is in pre-production, it could be announced at Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic Con panel on Saturday, July 23 at 10:30am PT / 1:30pm ET / 6:30pm BST / 11pm. STI We suspect it would also be part of Marvel’s Phase 5 plans, rather than being another Phase 4 entry.
Still, there are quite of the MCU productions should arrive before a potential Eternals 2. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the next Marvel movie to hit theaters in November. Before that, though, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law comes to Disney Plus in August.
